What happens when there is no life insurance?

Hello everyone I am Jeannie Yates and you can find my bio on our “About Our Agency” Page.

So many people don’t have life insurance and they feel they don’t need it. I have been told, “I will be dead, what will it matter? They can just bury me in a box or toss me in the river. ” Unfortunately, that isn’t how things work. There are laws in place when it comes to how humans are buried or even cremated.

My family believes in life insurance. In a terrible tragedy my grandmother lost her son at a young age. She has been a strong believer in life insurance and everyone in my family has a policy. I am not used to having to deal with a death when there is no life policy and I really don’t know how to take care of someone when in a situation like this. I thought that because my family all has life insurance I would never have to deal with this kind of situation.

However, very recently I had a family member pass away. This family member was a family member only by marriage. One who was no longer married to my blood relative and had no been for a long time. Somehow through circumstances out of anyone’s control I have been the one chosen to take care of this person’s final arrangements. And it is one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do.

First I had to contact the morgue. Then I had to call around to funeral homes and get prices. Did you know a cremation without any kind of service is over $1800? I didn’t. So now I am struggling to come up with that money. Something I never thought I would have to do.

So if you do not have life insurance please try to get some. There are so many companies that can offer affordable prices and even companies who will extend coverage if you have health issues. If you absolutely cannot afford coverage set a little money aside so that whom ever is to take care of your final arrangements can do so. It’s so hard on your loved ones when your pass adding a financial burden is the last thing you want to do.

Because, you cannot be buried in a cardboard box. Because, we cannot toss you in the river. Because, someone is responsible for you no matter what you may think. Because that person might just be me.
